Police Background Check

Police background check could be an effective way to know a person’s background. It could be your best bet if you want to conduct a state background check on the subject. FBI or other states history however are not reflected in a particular state’s police background check. You need to approach other states to obtain another police background check. This is so because there is no national database for criminal checks. Criminal background checks are often conducted in as state-by-sate basis. Police maintains a record bureau where you can request for a copy to make a part of your police background check.  Police records contain files on processing of warrants issued by City and County Courts, storage and safekeeping of all evidence and property, completion of criminal background checks and the processing of requests for copies of police reports and records.

Police background check is based on the fingerprints submitted after an individual’s arrest.  As part of the restrictions on the police background check, you are not allowed access to the same information that is provided specifically for the law enforcement. You cannot also access arrests that are pending.  And lastly, you cannot obtain traffic records that do not appear on the criminal record for your police background check.   To obtain a copy of the police report for your police background check you need to file and complete a request form and call the Records Bureau to inform the clerk in charge that you requested for police report.  Unfortunately, you cannot conduct your own police background check through the copy of the police files you will be furnished because you are only allowed to obtain a police report regarding you and your property. You cannot obtain a police report on your ex-wife or ex-husband, tenant or neighbors which could limit your chances of conducting a comprehensive police background check on your own.

Police background check, however, can be conducted by the police on an individual. But the individual’s consent is necessary in order to confirm that there are no criminal records on file.  If you want to request for a police background check on a certain person, you can fill up a Police Background Check Form which is provided at the police department or can be obtained online through the police’s website.  Print and fill out the form and bring it to the police station.  The person subject of the background check must be informed of your intention. You must let the subject of the background check complete a portion of the Police Background Check Form.  Then you return the filled up form to the police station in order to start the police background check. Once the police background check is complete, you will be notified. You will have to go to the police department to pick up the police background check result.  You need to bring a current identification with you to verify identity. And then pay the necessary fee for the police background check in order to obtain the report.
